After a long journey with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Alex passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at LHSC – University Hospital, London surrounded by his loving family. He has left behind many broken hearts. Alex was in his 32nd year.
Cherished son of Alan and Elizabeth Kain. Loving little brother to Ashlen (Justin) Schembri and Andrew (Dayna) Kain. Uncle Alex to his loving nieces and nephews, Jace, Rylee, Zachary, Carter, and Coraline. Survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and grandma. Predeceased by his grandparents, Ronald and Cora-Beth Rush and Keith Kain.
Alex enjoyed playing video games, card games and Dungeon & Dragons with family and friends, and enjoyed socializing with friends and neighbours who were like family.
Many thanks to Alex’s many healthcare providers throughout his life, the home Palliative Care team, the ER team at University Hospital and to the First Responders who helped us on May 17, 2025. A special thank you to two very special friends who helped his parents retire early to spend more time with Alex at home.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in July. Please check back for service details.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Defeat Duchenne Canada in Alex’s memory would be gratefully appreciated.

My dear friend, Liz, Alan, Ashlen, Andrew and your families, I am so saddened to hear of Alex’s passing. I know you are all heartbroken beyond measure. Alex was so special to all of you! Your pride in him came out every time you talked about his great and little accomplishments, especially his poetry. You were the most devoted and courageous mom and family and you took such good care of Alex. He lives forever in your thoughts and in your hearts. Take the time you need, but know that I am thinking of you, and hope I can reach out to you when you are ready.

I can’t image the pain you must be in at this time. My heart breaks for you as you grieve the loss of Alex. He was such a courageous young man with such a beautiful smile, great sense of humor and a grin and giggle that made you melt. He was blessed to have such a loving and caring family. So much of family life centred around Alex by meeting him where he was at during his journey. The love and commitment from his family give him the strength and will to live his life to the fullest. Each family member had a special place in Alex’s life. He was so loved and will be missed greatly.
Please reach out when you are ready. If I can help in any way please let me know. Sending love.
So sorry for your loss. I didn’t know Alex well but I know he had a great sense of humour from his Xmas letters. I also know he had the best family to help him live his best life. I can’t think of anything worse than losing a child but I’m sure you will support each other thru this. My thoughts are with you. Cathy
